Wonders of the Ganges

Apr 27, 2019 | Blog

“The Ganga, especially, is the river of India, beloved of her people, round which is intertwined her memories, her hopes and fears, her songs of triumph, her victories and her defeats. She has been a symbol of India’s age-long culture and civilization, ever changing, ever flowing, and yet ever the same Ganga.” – Jawaharlal Nehru, First Prime Minister of India, born in Allahabad on the Ganges.

The river Ganges makes an appearance repeatedly in the Vedas, Puranas, Ramayana, and Mahabharata. It is home to many myths and legends, but the most popular one by far is from Hindu mythology. They say that Lord Shiva gifted Bhagiratha the River Ganga, the path, as an answer to his prayer to find the six thousand sons’ ashes and liberate their souls.

Immerse yourself in the holy traditions of Hinduism

To bathe in the River Ganga is a lifelong tradition for the Hindu people. It is said that the River Ganga washes away all their sins and clears their souls of impurity.

During your journey along the Ganges River with Kosher River Cruises, you will notice thousands of people at the banks of the river performing acts of worship, partaking in ceremonies, and offering prayers to the Gods. This is a look into the old traditions of India that have not faltered through time.

Tour the holy temples on the river banks

The River Ganges is one of the most sacred sites in all of India; it is surrounded by an expanse of beautiful temples and places of worship. It is perfectly fine for tourists to go temple hopping so long as they respect the practices inside the temple and dress appropriately.

If there is an ongoing service while you’re visiting the temple, refrain from taking pictures as it may distract the people inside and you may be ushered to leave.

Take a yoga class

India is the founding place of Yoga. To the Indians, it is not just a form of exercise and a way to keep themselves physically fit, but an entire lifestyle. You will find that Yoga is deeply rooted in spirituality; it is an art form that is to be revered.

Aside from moving from pose to pose you will be taught how energy flows through you, how the gaze is important, and why breathing is key to a successful yoga class. Think about that during your next Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga class.

Set sail for the Land of Mystery and Diversity! Get the chance to explore the wonders of the Ganges with KRC. Avail a kosher cruise to India in our upcoming River Expedition excursion.

Tour dates to be announced.

Another successful experience

Our experience was unique in that we were able to tour a lot of territory and a variety of places with minimal inconvenience. The fact that our boat was always with us and there were no long bus rides or waits made this mode of travel extremely enjoyable.
