Jewish Heritage Tours Presents: Rabbi Yosef Albo and the Jewish Struggle to Preserve Faith in Medieval Spain

Oct 1, 2026 | Blog, Jewish History

Jewish history is filled with moments when scholarship became more than intellectual study. In times of persecution, books often became tools of survival. Rabbi Yosef Albo was a key figure in this struggle. He was a medieval thinker. His writings boosted Jewish belief during a dark time in Spanish Jewish history.

His most famous work was Sefer ha-Ikkarim (“The Book of Principles”). It came from fear, pressure, forced debates, and the rising threat of religious persecution in Christian Spain.

Who Was Rabbi Yosef Albo?

Rabbi Yosef Albo was likely born around 1380 in the Kingdom of Aragon in medieval Spain. He studied with the famous Jewish philosopher Hasdai Crescas. His teachings had a big impact on Jewish thought in the late Middle Ages.

Albo lived during a period of intense instability for Spanish Jews. Jewish communities faced growing hostility, violence, and pressure to convert to Christianity. The anti-Jewish riots of 1391 caused massive destruction and many forced conversions in Spain. Many Jewish families were left shaken, divided, or displaced.

In this uncertain climate, Jewish scholars had to defend their faith openly. At the same time, they worked to keep their communities’ spirits high in private.

What Was the Disputation of Tortosa?

One of the defining events in Rabbi Yosef Albo’s life was the Disputation of Tortosa.

The disputation took place from 1413 to 1414. It was a long, controlled debate between Jewish rabbis and Christian leaders. Jewish leaders were called to Tortosa. They faced pressure to defend Judaism from strong attacks by Christian scholars.

Like many medieval disputations, the outcome was largely predetermined. The debates were not designed as open discussions between equal sides. Instead, they often served to publicly weaken Judaism and encourage conversion to Christianity.

For many Jews, who had already faced violence and forced conversions, the disputation was another heavy blow. Thousands were left demoralized as Jewish life in Spain continued to deteriorate.

Rabbi Yosef Albo was among the Jewish participants involved in this difficult confrontation. The experience would shape his most influential work.

Why Did Rabbi Yosef Albo Write Sefer ha-Ikkarim?

Following the disputation, Rabbi Yosef Albo composed his monumental work, Sefer ha-Ikkarim.

The title translates to “The Book of Principles” or “The Book of Roots.” In this multi-volume work, Albo examined the core beliefs of Judaism. He also clarified what he viewed as the key principles of the Jewish faith.

The work addressed questions that had become deeply urgent for Spanish Jews:

  • What beliefs define Judaism?
  • Which principles are essential to Jewish identity?
  • How can faith survive under persecution?
  • How should Jews respond to theological attacks?

Albo’s writing combined philosophy, theology, and sharp religious argumentation. Some parts directly challenged Christian views. They also showed the strong emotions of the time they were created.

Many historians think the book held ideas Albo couldn’t share during the Disputation of Tortosa. Sefer ha-Ikkarim served as a defense of Judaism. It also addressed the humiliation felt during the debate.

How Did Sefer ha-Ikkarim Influence Spanish Jewry?

The influence of Sefer ha-Ikkarim spread widely throughout Jewish communities after its publication. The work was reprinted many times. It became very important for Spanish Jews facing more pressure from the authorities.

As the Spanish Inquisition grew harsher, many Jews pretended to be Christian. But they still tried to keep their Jewish beliefs hidden. Conversos, or crypto-Jews, sought ways to keep their spiritual identity alive, even in constant danger.

Albo’s writings offered encouragement during this difficult era. His book helped readers reconnect with the core of Jewish belief. This was important when fear and uncertainty threatened to erase their community’s identity.

Sefer ha-Ikkarim didn’t just tackle abstract philosophy. It also spoke to the emotional and spiritual struggles of Jews in medieval Spain.

Why Does Rabbi Yosef Albo Still Matter Today?

Rabbi Yosef Albo’s story shows a key theme in Jewish history: keeping faith alive through learning and strength.

His writings came from a world of persecution, forced beliefs, and social chaos. Albo didn’t let those conditions silence Jewish thought. Instead, he turned them into a chance to define and strengthen Jewish belief.

Today, Sefer ha-Ikkarim is still a key text in Jewish philosophy and medieval Jewish history. It is both a theological text and a look into the challenges faced by Spanish Jews before their expulsion in 1492.

Six centuries later, Rabbi Yosef Albo’s work shows us that real courage and strength often grow in hard times.
